Strategic investment in sports infrastructure: The Republic of Moldova could build a new Olympic swimming pool with European support

The Republic of Moldova could benefit from an additional 50-meter Olympic swimming pool, alongside the one currently located at Arena Chișinău.

The topic was discussed in Chișinău during a meeting between the State Secretary responsible for sports within the Ministry of Education and Research, Sergiu Gurin, and the President of European Aquatics, Antonio Silva, who is on his first official visit to the country.

European support for funding

According to the Ministry of Education and Research, representatives of European Aquatics have expressed their willingness to partially contribute to the funding of a new Olympic swimming pool. The implementation of this project would play an important role in the development of competitive sports and would give the Republic of Moldova the opportunity to host international competitions in the field.

Development of swimming and training of specialists

Sergiu Gurin emphasized that the Ministry of Education and Research (MEC) is making constant efforts to promote swimming at the national level and expressed interest in improving the training of coaches and specialists in aquatic sports.

In turn, representatives of the European federation stated that they will support the organization of training programs, seminars, and courses for specialists in the Republic of Moldova, facilitating access to modern training methods and international coaching standards.

Visits to sports infrastructure

During the official visit, the leadership of European Aquatics also assessed the country’s swimming infrastructure, visiting several schools and sports facilities in the field.

Arena Chișinău remains the only Olympic pool

Currently, the only 50-meter Olympic swimming pool in the Republic of Moldova that meets international standards is located within the Arena Chișinău complex. The construction of a new pool would represent a significant step in the development of national swimming.
