The Republic of Moldova and UNDP Strengthen Cooperation on Investment, Energy Digitalization, and Accelerating Reforms

Prime Minister Vasile Tofan held a meeting with Daniela Gasparikova, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the Republic of Moldova.

The officials reviewed the priority areas of cooperation for the coming period and the ways in which UNDP can contribute to accelerating reforms and implementing development projects.

Support for Strengthening Institutional Capacity

The Prime Minister highlighted UNDP’s contribution to addressing the challenges faced by the Republic of Moldova in recent years, including in the areas of energy security, digital transformation, and strengthening public institutions. Currently, UNDP is implementing 34 projects in the Republic of Moldova, with activities reaching approximately two-thirds of the country’s communities.

Investment and Economic Development

The meeting also addressed the expansion of cooperation in areas that can stimulate economic growth and support the reform process. Priorities include the development of infrastructure for the business environment, including the creation of new industrial parks, strengthening local economies, and preparing projects capable of attracting investment.

Digitalization of the Energy Sector

An important part of the discussions focused on the modernization and digitalization of the energy sector. UNDP is already supporting a pilot project for the installation of smart meters in several localities across the Republic of Moldova. The technology enables the automatic transmission of consumption data, billing based on actual consumption, and faster identification of potential network incidents.

In the long term, the expansion of smart metering systems will contribute to more efficient energy consumption management and facilitate the integration of a larger share of renewable energy into the system.

Measures for the Cold Season

The officials also focused on preparations for the cold season and the measures needed to support vulnerable households. Cooperation in this area aims to reduce the impact of potential energy-related difficulties on the population and strengthen the resilience of communities.
