The Government of the Republic of Moldova has approved a draft law providing for the country’s accession to the Hong Kong Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships.

The international instrument establishes the framework required for the responsible management of end-of-life ships, with a particular focus on environmental protection and the safety of individuals involved in the recycling process.

According to Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Bolea, accession to this convention will help reduce risks to public health and the environment. At the same time, the measure reflects the Republic of Moldova’s commitment to implementing modern, internationally recognized standards in the maritime sector.

The Convention includes provisions on the management of hazardous materials on board ships, the authorization of specialized recycling facilities, and the implementation of inspection and certification procedures.
