Minister of Environment, Iordanca-Rodica Iordanov, and the Head of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in Moldova, Catarina Bjorlin Hansen, recently signed in Chișinău the Grant Agreement (E5P) between the Republic of Moldova and EBRD, worth 5.4 million euros.
This agreement will fund infrastructure projects for solid waste management, including the construction of a regional sanitary landfill, in accordance with European Union standards. The project will also encompass sorting and composting facilities in Dondușeni, the construction of transfer stations in Briceni and Edineț, and the procurement of equipment necessary for an integrated waste management system.
The E5P grant complements a sovereign loan of 25 million euros provided by EBRD to the Government of the Republic of Moldova, as part of a broader financing package that includes an additional loan from the European Investment Bank, as well as investment grants from other bilateral organizations.
The E5P Fund, totaling 242 million euros and initiated by Sweden, operates in the Eastern Partnership region, with Moldova receiving 50 million euros, including a contribution of one million euros from Moldova itself. The largest contributor to this fund is the European Union, with 28.95 million euros, and other donors include the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Romania, the Slovak Republic, and Sweden.
EBRD is a prominent investor in Moldova, with investments exceeding 2 billion euros in the country through 160 projects, over half of which are dedicated to sustainable infrastructure.
