The Ungheni Bridge, Republic of Moldova, is progressing as a strategic €33 million investment and has reached 50% completion
Construction works on the “Flower Bridge” in Ungheni are progressing steadily, and the project has reached a physical completion stage of nearly 50%.
An important milestone was the delivery of the first batch of steel deck sections to the construction site on the Republic of Moldova’s riverbank. This structural element will support the roadway of the bridge and marks the transition to a new phase of construction.
Installation of the Structure and Progress of the Works
In the coming period, four additional steel deck sections are scheduled to be transported and unloaded through ten special transport operations. At the same time, construction works continue on both banks of the Prut River. So far, the drilling of the piles, the construction of the abutments, and the support piers have been completed, while on the Romanian side, the installation of the steel deck has already begun.
Direct Connection to European Infrastructure
The new road bridge will have a length of 261 meters and will create a direct link between the Republic of Moldova, the Union Motorway (A8), and the European transport network. Authorities estimate that traffic on the bridge will be opened in the autumn of this year, which will provide a significant boost to regional connectivity.
The Symbolic Significance of the Project
Construction officially began on April 26, 2025, at a symbolic moment marking 35 years since the historic “Flower Bridge” event of 1990. At that time, residents on both sides of the Prut River were able to cross the border freely for the first time after decades. The name of the current bridge recalls that representative episode of closer ties between the Republic of Moldova and Romania.
A Strategic Investment for the Region
The total value of the project is estimated at approximately €33 million, with funding provided through European funds under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). Implemented in partnership by the authorities of the Republic of Moldova and Romania, this is the first new bridge built over the Prut River in the last 60 years and is considered a strategic project for infrastructure development and for integrating the Republic of Moldova into the European transport corridors.
