The History and Culture of National Communities at the Heart of the Event

The history, traditions and culture of the Romanian, Hungarian, Slovak, German and Jewish communities in Transcarpathia were showcased during the last weekend of summer as part of the “Ethnic Palette of Transcarpathia” event. Hosted by the Transcarpathian Regional Museum of Folk Architecture and Traditions, also known as the Uzhhorod Open-Air Museum, the event brought together academic discussions, folk music, traditional crafts and local gastronomy.

Conference Dedicated to Ethnocultural Heritage

The programme began with a scientific and practical conference attended by representatives of national communities, researchers, museum professionals, local historians, cultural figures and members of civil society.

Entitled “The Ethnic Palette of Transcarpathia: History, Cultural Heritage and Museum Representation”, the conference was organized in two sessions. The first focused on the history, traditions and current realities of the Romanian, Hungarian, Slovak, German and Jewish communities in the region.

Preserving Heritage in the Museum Environment

The second session focused on the preservation and promotion of the heritage of national communities within museums. Researchers presented topics related to the traditional architecture and culture of Romanians and Hungarians, Hutsul heritage, as well as the sacred heritage of the German and Jewish communities.

The discussions also highlighted the role of the Uzhhorod Open-Air Museum in preserving and promoting the ethnocultural diversity of Transcarpathia.

Music, Traditional Crafts and Gastronomy

Following the academic sessions, the event continued with a cultural and artistic programme featuring performers and folk ensembles representing various communities from across the region.

Visitors also had the opportunity to take part in the thematic tour “The Language of Symbols: Talismans and Protective Objects in the Traditions of Transcarpathia”, discover works created by traditional craftspeople and sample dishes from Transcarpathia’s traditional cuisine.

Folk Performance Concludes the Event

The event concluded with a folk performance by the Honoured National Academic Folk Choir of Transcarpathia, conducted by Natalia Petii-Potapchuk.

By bringing together academic research, folk traditions and cultural activities, the “Ethnic Palette of Transcarpathia” highlighted the diversity of the communities that contribute to the region’s cultural heritage and the importance of preserving it for future generations.
