Putin and Trump Discuss the War in Ukraine Again
Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump held another telephone conversation on Tuesday, following the recent visits to Moscow and Kyiv by U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The Kremlin described the discussion as “very frank” and “constructive”, stating that the two leaders addressed prospects for ending the war in Ukraine, as well as the development of relations between the United States and Russia.
Assessment of the U.S. Envoys’ Visits
According to information reported by AGERPRES, citing AFP and Reuters, Kremlin diplomatic adviser Yuri Ushakov said that Putin and Trump exchanged views on the outcome of the talks held by Witkoff and Kushner in Russia and Ukraine.
Ushakov said that both leaders regarded the visits by the U.S. envoys as a positive signal. Putin reportedly presented Trump with his assessment of the situation on the front and of measures that the United States could take to help bring the conflict to an end.
Kremlin Rejects Claims of Aggressive Plans toward Europe
During the conversation, Vladimir Putin reportedly told Donald Trump that Russia has “no aggressive plans regarding Europe”. The statement came in the context of broader discussions between the two leaders concerning regional security and prospects for resolving the conflict in Ukraine.
Trump Seeks a Swift End to the War
Donald Trump, for his part, reportedly emphasized his desire for the war in Ukraine to end as soon as possible. According to the Kremlin’s account, the U.S. president believes that resolving the conflict could create conditions for the resumption and development of relations between the United States and Russia.
Yuri Ushakov indicated that Trump sees the normalization of bilateral relations as having potential implications, including for trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.
Prospects for U.S.–Russia Economic Relations
The Kremlin adviser said that Donald Trump is determined to achieve a result regarding the conflict during his presidency, while Vladimir Putin supports this approach.
Any improvement in U.S.–Russia relations could have implications beyond the diplomatic sphere, including for trade relations and economic cooperation between the two countries. However, these prospects depend on the course of the negotiations and any progress toward resolving the war.
Prisoner Exchanges and Continued Dialogue
Putin and Trump also reportedly discussed the continuation of prisoner exchanges between Russia and Ukraine, an issue that has been part of diplomatic efforts over recent months.
At the end of the conversation, the two presidents agreed to remain in contact and hold further telephone discussions whenever the situation requires.
