Romania Signed a Strategic Partnership with the U.S. in 1997
The strategic partnership with the United States is one of the oldest such agreements signed by Romania after the 1989 Revolution.
“Since its launch, the strategic partnership has represented a key reference for Romania’s foreign policy, as well as an effective instrument for cooperation in support of our country’s reform efforts in political, economic, military, and administrative fields,” according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The strategic partnership with the U.S. was signed in July 1997, following the visit of then-U.S. President Bill Clinton to Bucharest.
Later, the relationship with the United States was reinforced through the signing of the Agreement on the Activities of U.S. Forces Stationed in Romania (“Access Agreement”) on December 6, 2005 (entered into force July 21, 2006), and the Agreement between Romania and the United States regarding the placement of the U.S. ballistic missile defense system in Romania on September 13, 2011, which entered into force on December 23, 2011.
Subsequent consolidation and structuring of the strategic partnership between the two countries have been marked by multiple joint declarations of commitment.
