Ukraine and Romania Prepare to Open a New Border Crossing between Zakarpattia and Satu Mare County

Preparations for the New Cross-Border Road Connection
Authorities in Ukraine’s Zakarpattia Region and Satu Mare County, Romania, are accelerating preparations for the opening of a new border crossing point, “Hiia – Tarna Mare”. The project aims to create a new direct road connection between the two regions and expand transport infrastructure between Ukraine and Romania.
At this stage, the works required to make the border crossing operational are being assessed and determined, with a focus on road infrastructure, access to the facility and ensuring the necessary conditions for the operation of border authorities.
Regional and National-Level Meeting
Preparations for the new border crossing were discussed at a meeting attended by Miroslav Biletskyi, Head of the Zakarpattia Regional Military Administration.
The meeting was also attended by Serhii Derkach, First Deputy Minister of Ukraine for Reconstruction, Infrastructure and Transport, and Pataki Csaba, President of the Satu Mare County Council.
The discussions focused on the steps required to open the “Hiia – Tarna Mare” crossing, as well as the measures that need to be implemented by both sides to prepare the infrastructure and services that will operate at the new border crossing.
Next Steps Toward Operational Launch
Following the meeting, the next stages of work were established, and the authorities agreed to organize a joint meeting of representatives of the two regions directly in the area where the border crossing is to be developed.
The on-site meeting will allow for a concrete assessment of the existing infrastructure, identification of the works that need to be carried out and coordination of the actions required to prepare the facility.
Road Infrastructure as One of the Main Priorities
One of the most important stages of the project is the development of access infrastructure to the future border crossing. Authorities are assessing the works required to build and develop the roads that will provide a connection to the “Hiia – Tarna Mare” crossing.
At the same time, the technical and logistical conditions necessary for the operation of border services must be created. In this regard, the project provides for the installation of temporary structures intended for customs officers and border police.
These measures are necessary to ensure appropriate working conditions and to properly organize border checks once the new crossing becomes operational.
Authorities Accelerate Preparations
According to the Zakarpattia authorities, preparatory work is progressing at an accelerated pace. The objective is to meet the deadlines established within the framework of Ukrainian-Romanian cooperation and complete the infrastructure stages required for the opening of the crossing.
Coordination between regional authorities, the relevant Ukrainian ministry and Romanian partners is considered essential for rapidly resolving technical and administrative issues.
Cooperation Between Zakarpattia and Satu Mare County
Miroslav Biletskyi thanked the Ukrainian Ministry for Reconstruction, Infrastructure and Transport for coordinating the project and for the support provided in preparing the new cross-border connection.
The Zakarpattia authorities also praised cooperation with Romanian partners, emphasizing the importance of direct dialogue between the authorities of the two regions for implementing the project.
A New Road Connection Between Ukraine and Romania
The opening of the “Hiia – Tarna Mare” crossing is expected to create a new direct road connection between Zakarpattia Region and Satu Mare County.
Through the development of this connection, the authorities aim to expand the network of border crossing points between Ukraine and Romania and strengthen cross-border infrastructure. The new crossing could also contribute to facilitating mobility and intensifying cooperation between communities and authorities on both sides of the border.
