EES Changes EU Border Crossing Procedures

The implementation of the European EES (Entry/Exit System) may, in certain situations, increase the time required to cross the border of the European Union. According to the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, the new mechanism is designed to electronically register the entry and exit of citizens from non-EU countries and reduce the risk of fraudulent use of travel documents.

Initial Registration May Take Longer

During the first crossing at a border checkpoint where the system is operational, travelers may need additional time to complete the verification procedures. The process involves collecting the person’s photograph and biometric data.

After the initial registration has been completed, subsequent checks are expected to be faster, as the traveler’s data will already be recorded in the system.

Automatic Monitoring of the Permitted Stay

The EES also enables the automatic calculation of the period during which a traveler is allowed to remain in the Schengen Area. For travelers subject to this rule, the system verifies compliance with the limit of 90 days within any 180-day period.

This allows authorities to identify potential overstays more efficiently.

Data Is Recorded Electronically

One of the main features of the new system is the transition from the traditional use of passport stamps to the electronic recording of entry into and exit from the European area.

Personal data collected through the EES is processed in accordance with European Union data protection regulations and is used for official border control procedures.

Travelers Are Advised to Plan Their Time Accordingly

Ukrainian authorities recommend that people traveling to the European Union take into account the possibility of additional waiting time during the initial registration.

To avoid delays, travelers are encouraged to plan their journeys in advance and allow sufficient time for border control procedures.
