Ukraine Prepares $286 Million in Investments in New Railway Connections to Romania and Poland

Ukrzaliznytsia Presents Strategic Railway Projects at the “Carpathian Eight” Summit

The state-owned railway company “Ukrzaliznytsia” presented several projects for the development of Ukraine’s European railway infrastructure at the “Carpathian Eight” summit held in Bukovel. Among the key initiatives are the construction of a new railway connection between Chernivtsi and Vadul Siret, at the border with Romania, as well as the integration of Lviv’s railway infrastructure into future European connections.

The projects are designed to strengthen Ukraine’s railway links with European Union countries and facilitate the movement of passengers and goods along routes connected to the European transport network.

A 47-Kilometre European Railway Line between Chernivtsi and Romania

One of the projects presented at the summit involves the construction of a European-standard railway line approximately 47 kilometres long, which would connect Chernivtsi with Vadul Siret, at the border with Romania.

The estimated investment amounts to approximately USD 186 million, while the project is expected to rely primarily on non-repayable funding in the form of grants.

The new infrastructure would establish a modern railway connection between Chernivtsi Region and Romania and could contribute to more effectively integrating western Ukraine’s transport infrastructure into European networks.

The Project Is Set to Be Integrated into the TEN-T Corridor

According to the plans presented by “Ukrzaliznytsia”, the new Chernivtsi–Vadul Siret railway line is expected to be incorporated into the European TEN-T “Baltic Sea – Black Sea – Aegean Sea” corridor.

Integration into this corridor would connect Ukraine’s railway infrastructure with the European Union’s transport network and strengthen logistics links between Ukraine, Romania and other European countries.

For the project, the technical and economic feasibility study is in its final stage, while the estimated implementation period is approximately four years.

Chernivtsi as a Potential Strategic Gateway to the European Market

The development of the railway connection to Vadul Siret could be of strategic importance for Chernivtsi Region, given its location on the border with Romania and its proximity to the European Union’s transport networks.

By developing European-standard railway infrastructure, the region could benefit from more efficient connections for passenger and freight transport, while Ukrainian companies could gain more direct access to European logistics corridors.

The project is therefore part of the broader process of adapting and integrating Ukraine’s transport infrastructure into European standards and networks.

Ukrzaliznytsia Proposes Integrating Lviv Railway Station into the New European Network

Another project presented at the summit involves integrating Lviv railway station into the future European railway line from Poland, through infrastructure development extending to the Sknyliv station.

The project includes the construction of a bypass railway line approximately 5 kilometres long, as well as the development of a new passenger terminal. The new infrastructure would enable more efficient integration of Lviv into future European railway routes.

USD 100 Million Investment and Poland’s Participation

The estimated funding requirement for the Lviv project is approximately USD 100 million. The investment is expected to rely on both non-repayable funding and Poland’s participation.

Poland’s involvement is linked to the development of railway connections between the two countries and the integration of Ukrainian infrastructure into the European transport network.

Ukraine Expands Its Railway Connections with the European Union

The projects presented by “Ukrzaliznytsia” at the “Carpathian Eight” summit reflect the direction of development of Ukraine’s railway infrastructure toward European networks. The Chernivtsi–Vadul Siret and Lviv–Poland connections aim both to modernize transport infrastructure and strengthen logistics corridors linking Ukraine with the European Union.

By attracting grant funding and involving European partners, Ukrainian authorities seek to accelerate infrastructure projects that could facilitate cross-border transport, support trade development and advance Ukraine’s economic integration into the European space.
