Education in the Romanian Language as a Pillar of Community Identity

Preserving national identity, traditions and the Romanian language among communities in northern Bukovina is closely linked to the quality of education provided in the mother tongue. In this context, modern schools that are well-equipped and adapted to current requirements represent not only spaces for educating students, but also important centers for preserving cultural and linguistic heritage.

Funding for the Modernization of the Dimca High School

The Public Organization “Society of Romanian Writers in Chernivtsi”, led by writer and journalist Nicolae Șapcă, has secured non-reimbursable funding from the Department for Romanians Abroad of the Government of Romania for the project “Digital Modernization of the Romanian-Language High School in Dimca, Ukraine”.

The project is currently being implemented and aims to improve learning conditions and develop the institution’s digital infrastructure.

Dimca, a Future Educational Center for the Romanian Community

The high school in Dimca is one of the important educational institutions serving the Romanian community in the region. More than 250 students and preschool children currently attend the institution, whose role could become even more significant in the context of Ukraine’s educational reform.

Starting in 2027, several educational institutions in neighboring villages are expected to lose their high school status. Under these circumstances, the Dimca high school could become one of the main centers providing education entirely in Romanian for students from the Hliboca area.

Investments in Digital Infrastructure

The project provides for the modernization of two essential educational facilities. The computer science laboratory is being equipped with 11 modern computers and printing equipment, while the language laboratory, also equipped with 11 computers, is being transformed into an interactive space for the study of Romanian and foreign languages through modern digital resources.

Through these investments, students will have access to modern educational tools and learning conditions aligned with European standards.

More Than One Million Hryvnias Invested in the Project

The total value of the project exceeds one million hryvnias, with the majority of the funding provided through non-reimbursable support from Romania.

The implementation of the project also benefits from the contribution and involvement of local partners, including the Society of Romanian Writers in Chernivtsi, Hliboca City Council and community representatives.

An Investment in Education and Identity

The modernization of the Dimca high school goes beyond the technological component. The development of educational infrastructure can help keep students within the Romanian-language education system and strengthen the school’s role in preserving the community’s cultural identity.

The support provided by the Department for Romanians Abroad also represents a clear sign of support for Romanian communities outside the country’s borders and for the development of mother-tongue education.

Support for Romanian Communities in Ukraine

The project demonstrates the importance of cooperation between institutions in Romania, Romanian community organizations and local authorities in Ukraine. Investments in schools contribute not only to the modernization of education, but also to creating better opportunities for young people in Romanian communities in northern Bukovina.

Against the backdrop of changes in Ukraine’s education system, maintaining strong Romanian-language educational institutions is becoming a priority for the future of the community and for passing the Romanian language and traditions on to future generations.
