Ukraine Seeks €220 Million in EU Support for the Recovery of Its Agricultural Sector

Ukraine has requested a subsidy of approximately €220 million from the European Union to support farmers affected by the consequences of the war and drought.

According to the European Commission, the Ukrainian authorities have already provided information on how the requested support would be used.

Impact of Attacks on Agriculture and Exports

The European Commission is closely monitoring the situation in the Black Sea and Ukrainian ports, which have been affected by Russian attacks. The strikes are having consequences for both the agricultural sector and Ukraine’s wider economy, including its capacity to export agricultural products.

Search for Alternative Transport Routes

The European Commission remains in contact with the authorities in Ukraine, Romania and the Republic of Moldova to assess alternative transport routes needed for the export of Ukrainian products. In this context, developments in Black Sea transport and the current functioning of the “Solidarity Lanes” are also being assessed.

EU Monitoring Crop Developments

The European Commission has stated that a clearer assessment of the agricultural situation is needed before deciding on any additional support measures. Key factors being monitored include crop developments, available storage capacity and export logistics, including maritime routes.

Trade Regime for Ukrainian Products

Regarding the access of Ukrainian agricultural products to the European market, the European Commission maintains that the EU–Ukraine free trade area continues to provide a stable and predictable trade framework for farmers on both sides. The preferential regime granted to Ukraine, through the removal of certain customs duties and the facilitation of access to the European market, nevertheless remains a sensitive issue for farmers in EU member states.
