Ukraine | Trump Prepares for Further Consultations with Putin Following U.S. Envoys’ Talks in Moscow and Kyiv

Trump Expected to Speak with Putin Following Consultations with His Envoys

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, intends to hold a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin after his special envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, brief him on the outcome of their discussions with representatives of Russia and Ukraine.

According to a U.S. official cited by the Ukrainian media, the Trump–Putin call could take place as early as September 7. Before contacting the Russian leader, the U.S. president is expected to consult with Witkoff and Kushner and subsequently speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

U.S. Envoys Hold Talks in Moscow and Kyiv

Washington is seeking to revive diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the war in Ukraine. Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner first travelled to Moscow, where they held talks with Russian officials on prospects for a ceasefire and an end to the conflict.

Donald Trump previously stated that his envoys had presented a proposal for ending the war in Moscow and described them as effective negotiators.

The two U.S. representatives subsequently travelled to Kyiv, where they met with Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Ukrainian officials. The talks also included national security advisers from the United Kingdom, France and Germany.

Witkoff: Washington Is Seeking a Diplomatic Solution

Steve Witkoff said the United States supports a diplomatic resolution to the war and considers direct dialogue with Russia essential to reaching a peace agreement.

According to the U.S. official, the talks in Moscow generated “new ideas”, which were subsequently presented to the Ukrainian side.

“We are trying to find a diplomatic solution to this conflict, not a military one. That has always been President Trump’s objective,” Witkoff said.

Kyiv Is Preparing Two Courses of Action

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has outlined two courses of action for the coming period. Plan A involves intensifying diplomatic efforts to reduce escalation and move closer to a peace agreement.

Plan B focuses on strengthening Ukraine’s defence capabilities, including the development of systems designed to intercept ballistic missiles and drones.

Zelenskyy also said that Ukraine is developing technologies to counter jet-powered drones, with approximately 67 Ukrainian companies operating in this field. According to him, several companies have already achieved results and are preparing to scale up production.

U.S. and Europe Strengthen Support for Air Defence

Alongside diplomatic efforts, the United States is expected to increase production of missiles for Patriot systems next year. Ukraine also has licensing agreements with Germany aimed at developing its own missile-defence capabilities.

Thus, diplomatic efforts are proceeding in parallel with measures to strengthen Ukraine’s military and technological capabilities.

Zelenskyy Confirms the Existence of “New Ideas”

The Ukrainian president said that Ukraine, the United States and European countries could continue discussions in the coming weeks on the details of the diplomatic process.

Zelenskyy did not provide further details about the new proposals, explaining that they need to be analysed before being made public. The stated objective is to identify solutions that could bring the parties closer to ending the war.

Kyiv Supports the Idea of Trilateral Negotiations

According to Zelenskyy, a potential trilateral meeting between Ukraine, the United States and Russia is also necessary. Kyiv supports the possibility of expanding such a format to include European partners, should Moscow agree to the proposed framework.

A Potential Trump–Putin Call Could Be the Next Diplomatic Step

In this context, a potential phone call between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin could represent the next significant step in the U.S. administration’s efforts to revive negotiations over the war in Ukraine.

The outcome of the consultations held by Witkoff and Kushner in Moscow and Kyiv could influence the direction of the next diplomatic contacts between Washington, Moscow and Kyiv.
