Ukrainian Company Ukrgazvydobuvannya Prepares Geothermal Power Plant for Electricity Generation in Zakarpattia

Pilot Project for Geothermal Energy Production in Zakarpattia

The Ukrainian company “Ukrgazvydobuvannya” intends to develop a geothermal power plant in the town of Solotvyno, in Tiachiv District, Zakarpattia Region. The investment project was presented during the “Carpathian Eight” summit, held in Bukovel, where development and cooperation opportunities in the Carpathian region were discussed.

The investment is designed as a pilot project aimed at harnessing geothermal resources for electricity generation and represents a new direction for the company in the field of renewable energy.

The Company’s First Experience in Geothermal Energy Production

For “Ukrgazvydobuvannya”, the project in Solotvyno is expected to be the company’s first initiative to use geothermal energy for electricity generation.

The power plant is conceived as a pilot facility through which the company will be able to assess, under practical conditions, the potential of geothermal resources and the feasibility of using them in Ukraine’s energy sector.

At this stage, no public information has been provided regarding the capacity of the future power plant, the exact construction timeline or the investment value. These elements are expected to be determined based on the results of studies and the technical preparation stages of the project.

Why Solotvyno Was Selected

The choice of Solotvyno is linked to the presence of geothermal resources in the area. The town in Zakarpattia is particularly known for its salt mines and thermal waters, which represent a source of thermal energy that can potentially be harnessed for energy purposes.

Utilizing heat originating from deep geological layers can provide an alternative source for energy production, particularly in regions with favorable natural conditions for exploiting geothermal resources.

By implementing the project in Solotvyno, the company aims to determine to what extent these resources can be transformed into a viable source of electricity.

Assessing Ukraine’s Geothermal Potential

The pilot nature of the power plant is also important from the perspective of assessing the geothermal potential of other regions of Ukraine.

If the project demonstrates the technical and economic feasibility of using geothermal resources for electricity generation, the experience gained in Solotvyno could be used to develop similar projects in other parts of the country.

Thus, the initiative could represent a first step toward broader use of geothermal resources in Ukraine’s energy sector, depending on their availability and the technical conditions in each region.

How a Geothermal Power Plant Works

A geothermal power plant is an energy facility that uses the natural heat accumulated in the Earth’s deep geological layers to generate electricity.

Depending on the characteristics of the geothermal resource, wells are drilled to depths where hot water or steam can be found. The thermal resource is brought to the surface through wells and used to drive a turbine connected to an electric generator.

Unlike energy sources that depend directly on weather conditions, geothermal resources can provide a constant source of energy where geological conditions allow them to be exploited.

A New Area of Energy Investment in Zakarpattia

The proposed project in Solotvyno highlights the potential of the natural resources of Zakarpattia Region and the possibility of harnessing them through modern energy technologies.

For “Ukrgazvydobuvannya”, implementing such a power plant would provide an opportunity to gain experience in a new field and assess the prospects for developing geothermal energy at the national level.

Depending on the results of the pilot project, Solotvyno could become a reference point for assessing and developing future investments in geothermal energy in Ukraine.
