UN Offers Grants to Strengthen Minority Rights in the Republic of Moldova

Civil society organizations in the Republic of Moldova have the opportunity to access grants dedicated to supporting minority rights, provided by the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights

These grants aim to strengthen the capacity of independent journalists and develop the skills of young people from ethnic, religious, or linguistic communities on both sides of the Dniester River, according to Știri.md, citing IPN.

The call for proposals is launched within the framework of the project “Strengthening Minority Rights in the Republic of Moldova” (Phase II), funded by the European Union. The project aims to ensure a higher level of respect, protection, and realization of minority rights, promoting inclusion and active participation of minorities in social and economic life.

Details on Available Sub-Grants

Two main sub-grants will be offered:

1. Training Journalists and Media Professionals

   • Objective: Strengthen journalists’ skills in human rights reporting on minorities.

   • Activities: Training at least 25 journalists and implementing a minimum of five content initiatives promoting minority rights.

   • Economic and social impact: Enhancing the quality and diversity of public information, which can stimulate better social inclusion and fair representation of minority communities in the media.

2. Youth Civic Engagement from Minority Communities

   • Objective: Develop civic and entrepreneurial skills among young people from ethnic, religious, and linguistic communities, including in the Gagauzia region.

   • Activities: Training 25 young people and organizing at least 12 local awareness campaigns.

   • Economic and social impact: Supporting youth in acquiring leadership and project management skills, enabling active participation in the economy and society.

Deadline and Procedure

Interested organizations must submit their proposals by February 26, 6:00 PM. The call for proposals aims to stimulate cooperation between civil society and minority communities, thereby strengthening social cohesion and the economic potential of these groups.

Through these grants, UN Moldova and the European Union seek to create a more inclusive environment, where minority rights are respected and valued, and where young people from these communities can actively contribute to the socio-economic development of the region.
