Chernivtsi University Plans Marble Hall Restoration Worth More Than UAH 11 Million

Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University plans to continue the restoration of the Marble Hall, part of the historic complex of the Residence of the Bukovinian and Dalmatian Metropolitans. According to information published in Ukraine’s Prozorro public procurement system, the estimated value of the new restoration works exceeds UAH 11 million.

Works to Restore Architectural Elements

The planned interventions are required due to the unsatisfactory technical condition of several elements of the hall, including the decorative features of the walls and columns, the parquet flooring and other decorative components.

According to the technical documentation, the works will include cleaning and repairing sections of the vault, eliminating cracks and restoring the ceiling finishes. Interventions are also planned for the columns and pilasters, including the restoration of artificial marble cladding.

Restoration of Decorative Features and Finishes

The project also provides for the restoration of plaster ornaments, moulded decorative elements and concrete components. The walls will be refurbished using finishes that imitate marble, with the aim of preserving the hall’s original architectural appearance.

Funding from Public Funds and Grants

According to information provided by university representatives, the restoration works will be financed primarily through grants and public funds. Only one bidder participated in the procurement procedure — the company “Stroirefir” from the Kyiv region, with which the contract could be signed.

The company was also involved in the restoration of the Marble Hall ceiling, completed last year. Under the terms of the tender, the new project is expected to be completed by 10 December 2026.

A Further Stage in the Conservation of a UNESCO World Heritage Site

The restoration of the Marble Hall represents a distinct stage in the broader conservation process of the Residence of the Bukovinian and Dalmatian Metropolitans. The architectural complex, built between 1864 and 1882, has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2011 and currently houses Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University.

The Marble Hall is part of the Metropolitan Building within the complex and is one of its spaces of particular architectural and decorative value.

Further Restoration Depends on Several Factors

University representatives state that the next stages of restoration and rehabilitation of the Metropolitan Building will depend on several factors, including the security situation, the availability of funding, access to qualified specialists and the logistical capacity required to carry out the works.

Ceiling and Vaults Restored with U.S. Grant Support

An important stage of the conservation project was completed in September 2025, when the ceiling, arches and vaults on the second floor of the Marble Hall were restored.

The works were carried out with support from a grant provided through the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation, contributing to the preservation and enhancement of the architectural heritage of the complex.
