During the “Health Panel” of FERM 2024, in the module “Social Economy in the Circular Economy: Stakeholder or Investor,” Father Liviu Burlacu, founding director of the Day Center “Izvorul Tămăduirii” Bacău, provided an overview of the recovery and social rehabilitation activities for individuals dependent on alcohol/drugs and other substances, presenting a detailed account of the institution he leads. The focus of his intervention was on: “Residential Center Izvorul Tămăduirii Bacău.”
A Holistic and Personalized Approach
Founded within the Socio-Medical Association “Siloam” – Monastery of the Annunciation – Tisa Silvestri, Bacău, this center offers a holistic and multidimensional approach to addiction treatment, unique in Romania.
At the core of the therapeutic program of the “Izvorul Tămăduirii” Center lies the “Minnesota” model, renowned for its success in treating addictions. This model addresses all four dimensions of human existence: biological, psychological, social, and spiritual. Through this approach, the center provides comprehensive and profound treatment tailored to the needs of each individual.
Services and Facilities
According to the director, the Center operates both in a residential setting and as a day center, located at Calea Romanului No. 37, Bacău. The residential building features 14 modern, well-equipped rooms, psychological and spiritual counseling rooms, and facilities for recreation and study. The day center, housed in a renovated parish house, offers spaces dedicated to group therapy, individual counseling, and occupational activities. The coordinator and program director of the center, Father Liviu Burlacu, emphasized the role of a team composed of spiritual counselors, psychologists, occupational therapists, and volunteers, who provide continuous and specialized support for beneficiaries. The team has extensive experience, with over 11 years in treating addictions and supporting the families of those affected.
The Minnesota Therapeutic Program: A Comprehensive and Innovative Approach to Addiction Treatment
The Izvorul Tămăduirii Center in Bacău utilizes the Minnesota Therapeutic Program, recognized for its holistic approach and effectiveness in treating addictions. This includes:
- Education on Alcoholism and Total Abstinence: Education provides patients with knowledge about the harmful effects of addictions, emphasizing the importance of total abstinence.
- Exploration of Spirituality: Patients are encouraged to develop their spirituality through various practices, offering moral and emotional support.
- Occupational Therapy: Practical and creative activities develop new skills and enhance self-esteem, promoting teamwork.
- Individual and Group Psychological Counseling: Counseling provides emotional support and behavior change techniques, creating a sense of community.
- Community Support and Personal Development: Support groups and personal development activities aid in maintaining long-term recovery and building a stable and healthy future.
Partnerships and Prevention Campaigns
Father Liviu Burlacu highlighted that Izvorul Tămăduirii Center collaborates with the Anonymous Alcoholics Association in Romania and other local institutions such as D.G.A.S.P. Bacău, the Bacău School Inspectorate, and the Bacău County Hospital. Together, they have carried out numerous prevention and awareness campaigns in the community, schools, high schools, and prisons, contributing to the education and support of individuals affected by various addictions.
Since its establishment in March 2011, “Izvorul Tămăduirii” Center has continually evolved, adapting to the needs of the community and expanding its services. With a dedicated team and strong partnerships, the center remains committed to its mission of offering hope and healing to those struggling with addictions.
