During the “Tourism Panel” of the Moldova Regional Economic Forum 2024, Nicolai Olărașu, lobby & advocacy consultant at ANTRIM and CEO of Crama Mingir, highlighted the vast potential of Moldova in the wine sector due to its high density of vineyards. The theme of his speech was: “The Importance and Role of Wine Tourism in the Republic of Moldova: Opportunities and Development Perspectives.”

The Density of Vineyards: A National Treasure

Moldova is recognized for having the highest density of vineyards per capita in the world,” Olărașu stated, thus emphasizing the strategic value of winemaking for the national economy.

Moldova hosts approximately 200 wineries and six educational institutions dedicated to wine and wine tourism. “This reflects a strong commitment to education and research in the viticulture field,” explained Olărașu, highlighting the importance of professional training in improving the quality of wine products.

Moldova ranks 20th in the world in wine exports, with wines exported to about 70 countries. “Key destinations include Romania, Poland, the Czech Republic, South Korea, Japan, and Canada,” noted Olărașu, highlighting the international success of Moldovan wines.

Moldovan wines have gained international recognition, winning over 6,500 medals at prestigious competitions such as Mundus Vini, Berliner Wine Trophy, and London Wine Competition. “These awards are a testament to the quality and passion with which Moldovan winemakers practice their craft,” stated Olărașu.

The Wine Road of Moldova: A European Cultural Route

The route “The Wine Road of Moldova” is the first cultural-touristic route certified by the Council of Europe, integrating circuits in the four wine regions with Protected Geographical Indication. “This is an example of synergy between tourism and winemaking, offering visits to 40 wineries and numerous cultural-wine events,” explained Olărașu.

International Expansion and Wine Tourism

The international expansion of the wine route, including in Romania and Ukraine, represents an opportunity for promotion and increasing exports. “This would facilitate exchanges of experience and commercial partnerships, thus contributing to market diversification and increasing revenues for Moldovan producers,” emphasized Olărașu.

Wine Tourism

Wine tourism is becoming increasingly popular, with 60% of tourists visiting at least one winery, and for 43%, the wine heritage is the main reason for their trip. “Promotional materials, such as the wine tourism guide and the map of wineries, support this type of tourism and contribute to local economic growth,” added Nicolai Olărașu.

Sustainable Development: Management and Sustainability

The project “The Wine Road of Moldova” promotes sustainable management, integrating social, economic, cultural, and environmental aspects. “This contributes to the sustainable development of wine tourism in Moldova,” concluded Olărașu, emphasizing the commitment to responsible and sustainable practices.

Top Events: Celebrations of Moldovan Wine

Among the main events dedicated to wine in Moldova are the National Wine Day, the Author Wine Festival, DescOpera, and VinOpera. “These festivals not only promote local wines but also attract tourists, thus contributing to the local economy,” emphasized Olărașu.

Mr. Nicolai Olărașu’s intervention at the Regional Economic Forum Moldova 2024 highlighted the multiple facets of wine tourism in the Republic of Moldova, from its economic and educational potential to international recognition and commitment to sustainable development. This not only underscores the strategic importance of the wine sector but also offers a clear perspective on growth and long-term development opportunities.
