According to information provided by the Financial Supervisory Authority (ASF), private pension funds, namely Pillar II and Pillar III, held assets worth approximately 149 billion lei at the end of June.
Pillar II recorded a 30% increase compared to June 2023
At the end of June 2024, mandatory private pension funds had assets totaling 143.3 billion lei, representing a 30.2% increase compared to the same period of the previous year, according to data provided by the Financial Supervisory Authority (ASF).
According to the report cited by Agerpres, the majority of investments made by privately managed pension funds, specifically 94.2%, were allocated to Romanian assets, predominantly those denominated in lei. Additionally, a significant proportion of these Romanian assets consist of government securities and shares listed on the Bucharest Stock Exchange.
“Investments by privately managed pension funds were made 94.2% in Romanian assets, most of which are denominated in lei. A large part of the Romanian instruments are represented by government securities or shares listed on the BVB,” the report states, according to Agerpres.
According to the cited source, in June 2024, contributions totaling 1.57 billion lei were collected, with an average of 383 lei per contributor.
At the end of June, government securities represented the largest portion of pension fund assets, valued at 92.185 billion lei, corresponding to 64.3% of the total. In second place were shares, with a total of 36.266 billion lei, equivalent to 25.3% of total assets. Corporate bonds occupied third place, with a value of 6.144 billion lei, representing 4.3% of total assets.
ASF reported that, in June 2024, mandatory private pension funds had 8,217,750 registered participants.
Within Pillar II, the active pension funds are Metropolitan Life, Aripi, AZT Viitorul Tău, BCR, BRD, NN, and Vital.
Pillar III recorded an increase of over 29%
According to an ASF report, at the end of June, voluntary pension funds had assets of 5.33 billion lei, recording a 29.7% increase compared to the same period last year.
“Most investments were made locally (96%), with the majority denominated in lei (89.7%),” the report states.
In June, according to the cited source, voluntary pension funds registered total contributions of 56.7 million lei, with an average contribution of 160 lei per participant.
In terms of asset structure, government securities dominated, with a total value of 3.453 billion lei, representing 64.8% of the total. In second place were shares, with a value of 1.432 billion lei, equivalent to 26.9% of total assets. Corporate bonds were in third place, with a value of 186.43 million lei, or 3.5% of total assets.
ASF data shows that, in June 2024, voluntary pension funds had 761,955 participants.
Within Pillar III, the active pension funds are Aegon Esențial, AZT Moderato, AZT Vivace, BCR Plus, BRD Medio, Generali Stabil, NN Activ, NN Optim, Pensia Mea, and Raiffeisen Acumulare.
