Strengthening Cross-Border Cooperation Between Botoșani and Chișinău: New Economic and Regional Development Opportunities

A delegation from the Botoșani County Council carried out an official working visit to the Republic of Moldova at the invitation of the Chisinau City Hall, aiming to strengthen bilateral cooperation in key economic and social areas

The event marks a new stage in the cross-border dialogue between the two administrations, initiated in May 2025.

Institutional Dialogue for Sustainable Development

The visit aimed to consolidate cooperation and identify joint projects in strategic fields such as public administration, education, culture, social services, water infrastructure, digitalization, and environmental protection. Discussions focused on capitalizing on opportunities offered by European cross-border programs, with real potential to attract non-reimbursable funding for regional development.

The Botoșani delegation was led by the President of the County Council, Valeriu Iftime, and Vice President Constantin Bursuc, accompanied by the President’s Chief of Cabinet, Ionel Aioanei, Executive Director of the Development and Promotion Department, Otilia Moruz, and representatives of subordinate institutions active in the relevant fields.

Practical Meetings and Exchange of Best Practices

Over the two days, Botoșani officials held working sessions with local authorities in Chișinău, including Mayor General Ion Ceban and Vice Mayors Angela Cutasevici, Irina Gutnic, and Bogdan Cazacu. The meetings also included heads of departments and representatives of municipal institutions responsible for education, youth, social assistance, and public health.

The agenda included plenary presentations on the development initiatives of the Chișinău municipality, as well as focused discussions in working panels held at various municipal institutions. These meetings led to the identification of clear directions for collaboration, including in public service digitalization and the implementation of joint projects that improve the quality of life for citizens on both sides of the Prut River.

Economic Outlook and Joint Projects

The meeting served as an informal platform for institutional dialogue and networking, with the goal of attracting additional institutions and relevant partners into the cross-border cooperation process. Emphasis was placed on developing sustainable projects, particularly in the areas of environmental protection and green infrastructure, applicable to both urban and rural areas.

Both Chișinău and Botoșani are undergoing processes of modernization and alignment with European local development standards. Through strategic partnerships, the two administrations can secure significant funding under Romania–Republic of Moldova cooperation programs, contributing to the economic, social, and institutional development of the region.
