China and Romania have signed a memorandum for the protection of the Danube Delta and wetland areas.

The Northeast Institute of Geography and Agroecology (IGA) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the National Institute for Research and Development of the Danube Delta (INCDDD) in Tulcea signed a cooperation memorandum on Tuesday to strengthen collaboration in biodiversity conservation, wetland restoration, and environmental protection during the opening ceremony of the 31st International Symposium “Deltas and Wetlands” 2024.

In a speech at the symposium, Gai Hongbo, Science and Technology Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Romania, stated that China is ready to promote scientific exchanges and cooperation with other countries in areas such as biodiversity conservation and combating climate change.

Jiang Ming, the director of the Chinese institute, shared China’s expertise in wetland preservation and emphasized the importance of involving young scholars in international research efforts. He proposed actively supporting young scholars involved in biodiversity conservation and food security.

Marian Tudor, the general director of INCDDD, emphasized the importance of collaboration with the Chinese institute, highlighting China’s progress in recent years.

During the event, several researchers from both institutes visited a local protected area to study the ecosystem.

The symposium, held from May 13th to 17th, attracted the participation of nearly 200 researchers from approximately 20 countries and regions.
