Corn crops in Romania, destroyed by scorching weather
In Buzău County, farmers have reported that the crops have been entirely affected. This year marks one of the lowest wheat productions.
“Not even in my worst nightmares did I believe that 2024 would bring such big surprises. Surprises much greater than in 2023, which also ended with nightmares. Back then, the cereal crops were saved by a rain that came a few days before the Easter holidays, about 30 liters per square meter, which was enough to help those crops produce over 5,000-6,000 kg/ha.
This year, however, despite the farmers’ hard work, to harvest for an hour with the combine and to produce 7,000 kg of wheat, just enough to fill one bunker, was hard to believe. This year’s production will be between 500 and 1,500 kg. I think you can count such fields on your fingers, and with the current market prices being around 80, 90 cents, it is unacceptable,” stated Ion Enache, the mayor of Cilibia commune.
