Romania Acquires 18 F-16 Jets from the Netherlands and Becomes a Regional Hub for Allied Pilot Training

On November 3, the governments of Romania and the Netherlands signed an agreement transferring 18 F-16 jets from the Dutch fleet to Romania.

The aircraft are already operating from the 86th Air Base Borcea in Fetești and will be integrated into the European F-16 Training Center (EFTC), strengthening Romania’s position as a regional hub for allied pilot training.

Strategic Investment in National Defense

According to Lockheed Martin, EFTC is more than a flight school. It serves as a comprehensive training center where real and simulated missions develop interoperability and trust among allied air forces. Liviu-Ionuț Moșteanu, Romania’s Minister of National Defense, emphasized that the agreement reaffirms Romania’s commitment to providing a high-quality training environment and contributing to the defense of allied airspace.

“Continuing EFTC operations allows Romania to consolidate its NATO role and become a European hub for all nations operating F-16 aircraft,” said the minister.

International Cooperation and Support for Ukraine

Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans described EFTC as “an example of successful cooperation,” highlighting that the transferred F-16s receive “a valuable new purpose” within the center. He also noted that Ukrainian pilots trained at EFTC are already contributing to defending their country against Russian air attacks, underlining the strategic dimension of regional and European cooperation.

Economic and Technological Impact

Integrating F-16 jets into EFTC generates significant economic and technological effects. Daily collaboration with Lockheed Martin and its industry partners allows Romanian specialists to gain advanced skills in aircraft maintenance and mission analysis. In addition, the center indirectly benefits the local economy through specialized job creation and contracts for supporting services and infrastructure.

Perspectives for European Security

This agreement strengthens not only Romania’s defense capabilities but also European security and NATO cohesion. EFTC becomes a regional training pillar, and the experience gained can be extended to other allied countries operating F-16 aircraft.
