Romania Emerges as a Strategic European Hub for Artificial Intelligence
Romania marks a significant milestone in technological and digital development with the launch of RO AI Factory, the country’s first national infrastructure dedicated to artificial intelligence.
Coordinated by the Institute for Artificial Intelligence Research (ICI) Bucharest in partnership with the POLITEHNICA University of Bucharest, the project represents a crucial step in strengthening digital skills and research capabilities at the national level.
This initiative positions Romania at the center of European AI developments, opening new economic, scientific, and strategic opportunities.
A Consortium of Excellence for Innovation and Research
RO AI Factory brings together a robust consortium of academic institutions and specialized organizations, including the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca (UTCN), the National Institute for Research and Development in Biological Sciences (INCDSB), Transilvania IT Association (ATIT), Institute for Artificial Intelligence Research (ICIA), the National Council of Small and Medium Private Enterprises in Romania (CNIPMMR), and the Romanian Digital Innovation Hub Association (RoDIH). This collaboration between academia, research, and industry will create an integrated ecosystem capable of transforming research into practical applications, supporting tech startups, and accelerating AI adoption in strategic sectors of the economy.
European Recognition and Strategic Integration
Romania has been selected among six European countries to host AI centers under the EuroHPC – AI Factories initiative, part of the Digital Europe Program. This initiative aims to enhance Europe’s competitiveness by developing digital infrastructure and research capabilities in emerging fields. Alongside Romania, the EuroHPC network includes centers in the Czech Republic, Spain, Poland, Lithuania, and the Netherlands, creating a platform for collaboration and expertise exchange that will drive long-term innovation and competitiveness.
Major Economic Impact and Development Opportunities
The implementation of RO AI Factory will have direct and indirect effects on the national economy:
