Romania, Key Node in the Vertical Gas Corridor: Europe Diversifies and Secures Its Energy Supply

Romania is emerging as a strategic player in Europe’s energy architecture through the Vertical Gas Corridor, recently utilized for the first time in a significant way by companies from Greece, Switzerland, and Ukraine, which reserved approximately 30% of the available capacity for the next six months.

This booking marks an important step in diversifying liquefied natural gas (LNG) sources and strengthening regional energy security.

Context and Strategic Importance

The Vertical Gas Corridor serves as a vital route for transporting LNG from Greece, through Bulgaria and Romania, to Ukraine, Moldova, and potentially Central and Western Europe. As Europe seeks to reduce its dependency on Russian gas, this infrastructure is crucial for supply security and market stability in the region.

Capacity and Timeline

The current reservation accounts for 6.32 GWh/day out of a total available 19.9 GWh/day, for a period of six months, until April 2026. This significant round was also stimulated by the reduction of regulated transit tariffs for gas destined to Ukraine, enhancing the corridor’s attractiveness for international operators.

Driving Factors

The increased interest in the corridor is driven by two main factors: Ukraine’s urgent need for gas during the upcoming winter season and active U.S. support for diversifying Europe’s energy sources. The reduction of transit tariffs through Romania further strengthened the corridor’s position as a competitive and reliable LNG route.

Romania’s Strategic Role

The national operator, Transgaz, plays a central role in the operation of the Vertical Gas Corridor, facilitating LNG transport and establishing Romania as a critical logistical hub for European energy security. This involvement enhances Romania’s regional influence and contributes directly to gas supply stability in Eastern Europe.

Medium- and Long-Term Perspectives

The corridor’s success depends on long-term contracts, a steady LNG supply, and infrastructure maintenance. In the medium term, the Vertical Gas Corridor provides Ukraine and Moldova with a secure alternative to traditional gas flows, reducing regional energy vulnerability and supporting Europe’s energy independence objectives.
