Romania Reaffirms Support for the Republic of Moldova’s EU Integration. Infrastructure, Energy and Investment at the Core of Talks Between President Nicușor Dan and Prime Minister Vasile Tofan

These priorities were reaffirmed during the meeting at Cotroceni Palace between Romania’s President Nicușor Dan and the Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, Vasile Tofan, who is making his first official foreign visit since taking office.

The meeting delivered an important political and economic message regarding the continuity of the strategic partnership between the two neighboring countries and Romania’s firm commitment to supporting the Republic of Moldova’s European integration in a regional environment shaped by security challenges and the need to accelerate investment in critical infrastructure.

Infrastructure Connectivity Remains a Shared Priority

One of the central topics of the discussions was the development of transport infrastructure linking Romania and the Republic of Moldova. The two leaders welcomed the recent signing of the agreement for the construction of the new Ungheni bridge, a project expected to become one of the most significant cross-border connections between the two countries.

The bridge will provide direct access to the future A8 Motorway – also known as the Union Motorway – a strategic corridor expected to facilitate the Republic of Moldova’s economic integration into European transport networks while improving trade and logistics across the Prut River.

The officials also welcomed the signing of the contract for the construction of Section IV of the A8 Motorway, marking another important milestone in one of the region’s most anticipated infrastructure projects.

For the business community, these transport investments are expected to reduce logistics costs, shorten delivery times, and significantly improve the investment attractiveness of Eastern Romania and the Republic of Moldova.

Energy Cooperation Remains a Strategic Pillar

Energy cooperation was another key item on the bilateral agenda.

Against the backdrop of current geopolitical challenges, strengthening energy security remains a top priority for both governments. Expanding cross-border energy infrastructure is regarded as essential for reducing vulnerabilities and increasing the Republic of Moldova’s energy independence.

The cooperation agenda includes the expansion of electricity transmission networks, the development of strategic energy infrastructure, and attracting investments aimed at integrating the energy markets of both countries more closely with the European Union.

Romania Reiterates Its Support for Moldova’s European Union Accession

President Nicușor Dan reaffirmed Romania’s unwavering support for the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union and welcomed the opening of the first negotiation clusters.

The message delivered in Bucharest once again confirms Romania’s role as the Republic of Moldova’s strongest advocate within the European Union, providing political, diplomatic and technical support while promoting concrete development projects that contribute to aligning Moldova’s economy and institutions with European standards.

The two officials also discussed regional security issues, particularly the impact of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine on neighboring countries.

Prime Minister Vasile Tofan thanked Romania for its consistent support and underlined the strategic nature of the bilateral relationship.

According to the Moldovan Prime Minister, cooperation between the two countries is built on mutual trust and on projects that generate tangible benefits for citizens and businesses alike.

He noted that discussions focused on the construction of additional bridges across the Prut River, expanding transport infrastructure, strengthening energy interconnections, and attracting new investments—key pillars for the Republic of Moldova’s long-term economic development.

Investment Promotion Featured Prominently on the Visit Agenda

Prime Minister Tofan was accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Vladimir Bolea, as well as Minister of Energy Dorin Junghietu, highlighting the importance of infrastructure and energy cooperation within the bilateral agenda.

The visit also includes meetings with the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Sorin Grindeanu, and the President of the Romanian Senate, Mircea Abrudean.

In addition, Prime Minister Tofan is scheduled to meet representatives of the Bessarabian Business Club during a session dedicated to promoting investment opportunities and strengthening economic cooperation between Romania and the Republic of Moldova.
