Romania to Sign a €300 Million Contract for a New PATRIOT System

The Ministry of National Defense (MoND) announced that in February 2025, a contract will be signed for the acquisition of a new PATRIOT air defense system

This system will replace the equipment donated to Ukraine, valued at approximately €300 million.

Defense Minister Angel Tîlvăr stated that the decision to donate a PATRIOT system to Ukraine was a strategic one, supported by the Romanian Parliament. According to the minister, the acquisition process has been accelerated thanks to the support of NATO partners and the U.S. Government.

International Support for the Donated System

For the donated equipment, financial support was provided by partners from three NATO member states, significantly reducing Romania’s budgetary burden. The Romanian state will only cover transportation costs and possibly the related VAT.

“The signing of the contract for the new PATRIOT system will take place in February, in line with the initial planning. This acquisition is a crucial step for strengthening national defense capabilities and reinforcing our commitment within NATO,” stated Defense Minister Angel Tîlvăr.

About the PATRIOT Systems

The PATRIOT air defense systems, produced by the American company Raytheon, are renowned for their efficiency in intercepting ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and enemy aircraft.

Key components of the system include:

• Radar – capable of detecting and tracking multiple targets simultaneously.
• Control Station – enables operators to manage defense operations.
• M901 Launchers – each can launch up to four missiles.
• PAC-2 and PAC-3 Missiles – tailored for different types of aerial threats.
• Power Generation Unit – ensures system operation in any conditions.

Romania will also receive three additional PATRIOT systems, as part of a previously approved program by the U.S. Government, thus strengthening national security and its contribution to NATO’s collective defense.
