Siegfried Mureșan appointed chief negotiator for the EU’s multiannual budget

MEP Siegfried Mureșan (EPP / PNL) was appointed on Thursday by the political groups of the European Parliament as chief negotiator for the future Multiannual Budget of the European Union (EU) post-2027

This budget, spanning 7 years, has a total value of approximately 1.3 trillion euros. Mureșan is the first Romanian MEP to hold this role.

Due to the high significance of this file, there will be two chief negotiators for the European Parliament. Mureșan was appointed from the EPP Group, the largest political group in Parliament, while the other negotiator will be chosen from the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D), the second-largest group in the European legislature.

Siegfried Mureșan stated, “I want the future budget to be more modern and flexible, capable of addressing all challenges. The development of this multiannual budget will be the most important decision of the current European Parliament term. I am honored by this appointment and grateful to my colleagues for their trust.”

Mureșan emphasized that he will draw on his experience as chief negotiator for the EU’s annual budgets and the European Recovery and Resilience Facility to advocate for Romania’s interests and secure the highest possible level of EU funds for the country. He highlighted the importance of adapting the budget to address modern challenges such as digitalization, climate change, and migration, while ensuring adequate funding for traditional EU priorities like agriculture and cohesion. Mureșan also noted the need for the budget to be prepared for unforeseen crises and to support new EU candidate states such as Moldova and Ukraine.
