First Japanese Cultural Center in Romania’s North-East Inaugurated in Iași: A Bridge Between Culture and Business

The first Japanese Cultural Center in Romania’s North-East was inaugurated today in Iași, marking an important step in strengthening cultural, academic, and economic relations between Romania and Japan.

His Excellency Takashi Katae, Ambassador of Japan to Romania, emphasized that Iași is not only a cultural and academic hub but also an attractive location for investments.

“This center will facilitate Romanian-Japanese cultural exchanges and represents the first step toward expanding our cultural collaboration. At the same time, Iași is hosting the third edition of the Romania-Japan Innovation Forum, an event dedicated to business leaders. Both initiatives help us understand each other better, culturally and economically, which will foster long-term academic and business partnerships,” the ambassador said.

Liviu Maha, Rector of the “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University, noted that the center institutionalizes a long-standing effort within the university. Although the current headquarters is temporary, the final location is likely to be in building R, where multiple classrooms dedicated to Japanese language and culture will be hosted.

“Today’s event formalizes our interest in Japanese language and culture, as well as the projects and activities already underway. The initiative was actively supported and coordinated by the Japanese Embassy, which manages similar centers in other regions of the country – approximately ten centers with experience are already functional,” the rector said.

📈 From an economic perspective, the opening of the cultural center aligns with Japan’s strategy to deepen cooperation with Romania, not only through cultural and academic exchanges but also by facilitating investments and creating new opportunities for local businesses. The Romania-Japan Innovation Forum, held simultaneously in Iași, gathers entrepreneurs and investors interested in bilateral collaborations, further positioning the city as a regional hub for business and innovation.
