Russian strikes key Ukrainian region of Kharkiv, killing 7

Thursday witnessed a barrage of Russian airstrikes targeting multiple sites in Kharkiv, including a printing house, resulting in the loss of seven lives as Russian forces encroach further into the region.

Exploiting vulnerabilities in Ukraine’s front line, Russian troops have steadily advanced towards Kharkiv over the past fortnight, despite the city having been liberated from Russian control earlier in the conflict. Notably, Kharkiv, a pivotal urban center, was among the locations subjected to the strikes.

In the early hours, the Ukrainian state railway network fell under attack, leading to six employees sustaining injuries, as confirmed by a statement from the company. A CNN team present in the vicinity observed evidence of the assault, including two craters and smoke emanating from impacts near a railway line.

The strikes resulted in injuries to twenty-three others.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the “highly brutal Russian assault” on Kharkiv and the nearby town of Lyubotyn, underscoring the vulnerability of Kyiv’s air defenses in the face of Moscow’s renewed offensive.

Zelensky highlighted how Russian forces exploit Ukraine’s limited air defense capabilities and the challenges in precisely targeting terrorist launch sites near the borders. This statement was made through Zelensky’s communication channel on X.

Earlier this month, the United States authorized a $400 million package comprising air defense munitions and other armaments for Ukraine. However, senior officials in Kyiv caution that this recent influx of aid may not suffice to repel further Russian advancements.
