Students from 5 universities in Iași will conduct research using IBM’s most advanced quantum computer!
A major technological project is placing Iași on the global innovation map: the most advanced quantum computing system developed by IBM is set to be installed in Romania, within the FreeYa Mind campus.
The initiative belongs to the FreeYa Mind Campus project, launched by local entrepreneurs, aiming to create a center of excellence in fields such as quantum technology and artificial intelligence. The campus will become the first of its kind in Romania and one of the few in Europe.
The quantum system that will arrive in Iași is valued at over €100 million and is expected to be delivered במהלך 2026, following the completion of implementation stages.
Unlike classical computers that use bits (0 and 1), quantum computers use qubits, which can exist simultaneously in multiple states. This feature allows them to process massive amounts of data and solve extremely complex problems much faster.
The technology will be used by students and researchers from several university centers across the country, including Iași, Bucharest, Cluj, and Timișoara. The project aims to train a new generation of specialists in cutting-edge fields such as cryptography, artificial intelligence, and advanced simulations.
Through this project, Iași has the chance to become an important regional center for research in next-generation technologies. The FreeYa Mind Campus will include not only computing infrastructure, but also laboratories, collaborative spaces, and an ecosystem dedicated to innovation and startups.
