The Unirii A8 highway takes shape! Romanian builder selected for the Iași section and one segment set as priority

A new milestone has been reached in the development of the A8 Highway, one of Romania’s most anticipated infrastructure projects. The section connecting Târgu Frumos and Lețcani will be built by a consortium led by the Romanian company Danlin XXL.

The contract, worth approximately 4.57 billion lei (around €900 million), could be signed in the coming days if no appeals are filed.

Priority Segment to Ease Traffic Congestion

A key component of the project is the priority construction of a roughly 4-kilometer հատված, which will serve as a bypass for Podu Iloaiei—one of the most congested localities in the Iași metropolitan area.

This solution aims to reduce frequent traffic jams and improve mobility across the region.

Complex Project with Dozens of Structures

The 28.6-kilometer հատված comes with significant technical challenges. The route will include:

  • 33 bridges and overpasses, totaling 7.8 km in length
  • 2 tunnels
  • 13 kilometers of connecting roads

These will ensure important links to DN28 and DN28D, allowing faster access to the city of Iași.

Most Expensive Highway Section in Romania Nearby

At the same time, another segment of the highway—bypassing Iași to the north (Lețcani – Iași Nord)—has been awarded to the Spanish company FCC Construction.

With an average cost of approximately €43.5 million per kilometer, this հատված becomes the most expensive highway project in Romania. The high cost is due to the complexity of the works: 6 tunnels, 18 bridges, and numerous viaducts covering more than half of the total length.

A Strategic Project Targeted for Completion by 2030

The A8 Highway will span დაახლოებით 300 kilometers and is divided into 13 sections, currently in various stages of implementation.

The project is considered vital for connecting the Moldova region with Transylvania and boosting economic development. Authorities estimate phased completion by 2030, with funding also coming from the SAFE Program.

If the current pace is maintained, the A8 could become one of Romania’s most important road arteries, significantly reducing travel times and encouraging investment in the region.
