Ion Ștefanovici: Suceava Airport – a strategic infrastructure for the Moldova Region and Ukraine. We propose a joint effort supported by the Government of Romania.

In a broadcast dedicated to infrastructure in the Moldova Region, aired by Antena 3 Suceava, Ion Ștefanovici – president of CAPDR (Center for Regional Development Analysis and Planning) – put forward a firm proposal to county and governmental authorities: the “Ștefan cel Mare” Suceava International Airport must become a regional cooperation project, officially supported by the Government of Romania.

“The Moldova Region can no longer be a patchwork of isolated initiatives. Suceava Airport serves not only Suceava County, but also the entire Botoșani County – located just 30 km away. That is a natural distance for any regional airport in Europe. We must treat it accordingly: as an objective of common interest”, said Ion Ștefanovici.

More than just a departure point for passengers, Suceava Airport proved its essential role during the conflict in Ukraine, becoming a strategic support corridor for Ukrainian state officials.

“President Volodymyr Zelensky and other high-ranking officials have used this airport for their travels. It has truly become a piece of strategic infrastructure for Eastern Europe”, Ștefanovici emphasized.

In this context, the Moldova Region must take ownership of its own infrastructure strategy—one that goes beyond county-level administrative logic and relies on inter-county and cross-border cooperation.

CAPDR’s concrete proposal is for the Romanian Government to provide institutional and financial support for a partnership between Suceava and Botoșani counties to expand and promote Suceava Airport as a regional hub for passengers, logistics, and strategic intervention.

“We need to understand that infrastructure connects not only people and goods, but also regional destinies. Moldova needs a unified vision – in transportation, in development, in geopolitics”, concluded Ion Ștefanovici.
