Republic of Moldova Accelerates European Integration: Two-Stage Accession Plan
President Maia Sandu of the Republic of Moldova recently reiterated her country’s commitment to European integration, proposing a two-stage accession plan.
This strategy reflects both Chisinau’s ambition to accelerate the EU membership process and the complex geopolitical realities in the region.
Two-Stage Accession Plan
During a press conference, Maia Sandu explained that Moldova can advance on its European path even amid difficult geopolitical conditions. The strategy includes:
1. First stage: Accession to the European Union without certain special-status regions, allowing for a rapid and stable integration.
2. Second stage: Completing the accession process, including the remaining regions, after political and territorial issues are resolved.
This pragmatic approach aims to maximize economic and political benefits for the country without compromising European standards.
Geopolitical Context and Relations with Ukraine
President Sandu emphasized that both Moldova and Ukraine meet the necessary conditions to advance toward EU membership. However, political blockages regarding Ukraine will not prevent Chisinau from continuing its own accession process, which could lead to a temporary decoupling of the countries’ accession timelines.
Economic Implications
EU accession will bring significant benefits for Moldova:
- Access to European funds, which can finance infrastructure and regional development projects;
- Increase in foreign direct investment, boosting competitive economic sectors;
- Integration into the European single market, facilitating trade and creating new jobs;
- Strengthening social and institutional systems by aligning education, healthcare, and rule-of-law standards with the EU.
Challenges and Perspectives
Despite the progress, Moldova faces several challenges on its European path:
* External geopolitical influence may complicate integration;
* Internal reforms require resources and political will;
* Public support is essential for long-term success.
The two-stage plan proposed by Maia Sandu represents a flexible strategy, adapted to current conditions, which can accelerate Moldova’s European integration and deliver tangible economic and social benefits.
